When it comes to capsule wardrobes, spring is definitely one of my favourite seasons to dress for (only topped by autumn, of course). When the weather is sunny and the temperatures are mild, it just somehow gets easier to let your true style personality shine through. You can be a bit more creative with layers when the weather starts warming up – you can even lose some of those heavy winter layers and really show off the cool outfits you’ve been wearing underneath!

For my spring essentials (what I like to call my “key pieces”) I like going for breathable materials such as linen, cotton and TENCEL and it’s probably also no secret to you guys when you look at my checklist above (which btw, you can download and use for inspiration right here), that I’ve been dying to wear more colour this year too. Don’t get me wrong, I love my neutral basics and I find them quite important for a timeless minimalist wardrobe as they are easy to mix and match. But wearing even just a bit of colour can have such a big impact on your mood, especially when you choose colours that not only bring you joy but that actually also make you look amazing. And lord knows, I think many of us need that mood booster from time to time. So maybe this year, why not try going for a few of those core basic items you love so much, but simply in a fresh, spring appropriate colour to keep things a little more current?

How many items for a spring capsule wardrobe?

Usually my capsule wardrobes contain around 35-40 items which has turned out to be quite the magic number for me over the past 6-7 years. However, if you’ve followed me for a while you will also know that my capsule wardrobe is never more “set in stone” that I can’t change it up in the middle of a season if something isn’t working or if I feel like something is missing. I’m not talking about going on a mid-season shopping spree here. I’m simply referring to the lovely little act of going through my storage boxes (aka shopping my own wardrobe) and making little tweaks here and there. Sure, if something unexpected comes up, like shrinking one of my favourite wool jumpers to kid’s size during a wash, I am “allowed” to make new wardrobe investments or replacements. The most important thing is – and I say this to clients all the time – that there has to be a coherence between the contents of your wardrobe and the contents of your life. When you do that kind of math, the number of items you should or shouldn’t have in your wardrobe will come naturally.

That’s also why (if you’re a regular here on my blog or on my YouTube channel) you’ll probably recognise a lot of the items I’ve brought out from storage this year, if you watch the video in the bottom of this post. Some of them I haven’t worn for a couple years, but with my shift in mindset this season and my courage to wear more colour again, it’s like I’ve gotten new clothes; only I haven’t spend a dime. I’m also doing a no-buy challenge this year, so keeping purchases on an absolute minimum is of course the core of that exact challenge, and with that I’ve taken the whole “shopping my wardrobe” a little extra literally this year.

Core spring essentials

Now, I’m not going to make a list of “spring essentials every woman should own” simply because I believe personal style is (and always should be, in order to be truly sustainable) reflected on you, your life and your personality. Thus, the “essentials” will look different for all of us. Copying someone else’s capsule wardrobe entirely (instead of simply getting inspired by it) is probably one of the biggest capsule wardrobe mistakes you can make. Having said that, if I had to name a few of my own core essentials for spring, I’d have to highlight my trench coat for one, because it’s perfect for transitional weather and I just never get tired of wearing it. The same goes for my biker jackets – both the classic black one I keep in my wardrobe all year round and then my beige biker jacket which I think is a lovely, light alternative for spring. Oh, and spring is all about getting those ankles out! I love cropped leg jeans and trousers, always have and always will. And they look great with white sneakers, classic loafers (another great classic for spring) or even ankle boots all through the year really, but spring is that time where you can actually rock the cropped trouser look without freezing off your ankles. And then like I mentioned above, a couple basics in spring colours that suit my colour type like a pale blue, blush pink or dusty olive which all go well with my soft/cool/light colouring, is another great way to keep your basics looking fresh. Other than that I can’t wait to be able to wear classic shirts and my go-to jeans, blazer and tee combo on repeat; all without having to wear a thousand layers on top.

With the 30 basic items and the additional 10 spring key pieces on my checklist above, I feel like my spring capsule wardrobe has truly captured my style personality and my mood for this season. Personal style is not about following trends, however keeping things current is key and so I of course pay lots of attention to styling and general wardrobe care these days. The right set of styling tools for your style personality can make a huge difference for your daily outfits! If you’d like some inspiration exactly on how to keep your outfits looking fresh and current (without shopping) then check out this video I made recently.

With that, I wish you all a lovely start to the spring season. I hope the sun will be shining loads on all of you. Hopefully I’ll see some of you over on Instagram, where I’ll be sharing lots of spring capsule outfit ideas!

Love,
Signe xx

Signe what size are your new boxy blue and white tees from organic basics? Sizing is tricky and returning things to find proper size can be wasteful. Thank you Susan

Hi Signe, I love this thank you! Do you have any tips on what to do if you have a separate work wardrobe where the pieces aren’t crossed over into my casual weekend wardrobe or evening out outfits? Do have double the pieces or have 2 smaller wardrobes, I work 5 days a week, 3 in the office, 2 at home ( loungewear obviously lol) thank you x
