Eco-friendly fashion: how to make the first steps easier on yourself

These tips are beyond supporting ethical fashion brands (which is of course also essential). So this post has more focus on “using what you have” than “shopping for new” – but should you be interested in delving into the amazing world of sustainable fashion brands you can check out my library HERE.

I’ve been making online content about so-called “sustainable” fashion and lifestyle for about 5 years now, and even though I’ve been doing it for so long I still don’t like labelling myself as an expert. Simply because I still make mistakes sometimes and I don’t have the right answers to everything. I keep myself updated sure, and I try to make the best possible choices based on the newest knowledge but one of the biggest reasons I wanted to start the #2020wehaveplenty challenge this year is not only to challenge myself and my community, to become better consumers. It’s also to give us all a little peace of mind. A break from having our choices being judged (both from people on the outside and ourselves questioning everything we do) when you try to pursue a more eco-friendly lifestyle. To focus a little less on consumption and a little more on learning to enjoy what we already have available to us, instead of being stressed out by the trial and errors we are constantly exposed to in a whole new world of greenwashing. Because sadly, we are being tricked more and more as consumers like that. And at the end of the day we can’t solely rely on consumption when speaking climate change – we have to look more within too, to move away from feeling entitled to consumption and look at it as the privilige it is.

I recently answered some questions for a podcast about why I – after 4 years – still enjoy building capsule wardrobes. And to sum up what we discussed during that interview, this way of looking at style and fashion has helped me make peace with myself and my wardrobe. Get out of the hamster wheel and look within, instead of letting myself be dictated by trends and what I “should” have in my wardrobe or not. I know I make these guides with (click-bait) titles as “basic wardrobe musthaves” myself, but in reality these are my musthaves. You can let yourself get inspired by those or not. During fall I’ll hopefully launch a brand new online course for everyone in my community, so you can learn to find out what your musthaves are. I’ll start taking private lessons to become a professional style coach already in February, and I can’t wait to get started. So I can get out there with much more confidence and cutting-edge knowledge, and help you guys get out of that hamster wheel and make peace with your wardrobes (and yourselves) just as I’ve taught myself these last 5 years.

Jeg har lavet online indhold om såkaldt “bæredygtig” mode og livsstil i ca. 5 år nu, og selvom jeg har været igang så længe vil jeg stadig helst ikke forpligte mig selv til, at kalde mig for en ekspert. Det bunder ganske simpelt i, at jeg stadig begår fejl somme tider og at jeg ikke har de rigtige svar på alting. Jeg holder bestemt mig selv oplyst og træffer så godt jeg kan mange af mine valg baseret på den nyeste viden indenfor bæredygtighed, men én af de primære årsager til at jeg i år har startet #2020wehaveplenty udfordringen er ikke kun for, at udfordre mig selv og mit community til, at blive bedre forbrugere. Det er også for, at give os alle en lille pause. En pause fra løftede pegefingre og det (både direkte og indirekte) pres der somme tider følger med, når man forsøger at tage de bedst mulige valg som forbruger. At flytte vores fokus mere over på, at lære at elske hvad vi allerede har og ikke hovedløst forsøge at navigere i en kompleks verden af greenwashing. For vi bliver desværre i højere grad snydt på denne måde som forbrugere. Og i sidste ende kan vi altså ikke kun forbruge os ud af klimakrisen – vi er også nødt til at se mere indad for, at flytte os fra at føle os berettiget til forbrug og acceptere at det mere er et privilegie, at vi har så mange valg.

For nyligt svarede jeg igennem optagelserne til en podcast på, hvorfor jeg på 4. år stadig er så stor fan af capsule wardrobe systemet. Og for at opsummere dét vi snakkede om på den halve time, så har denne måde at se på mode og stil hjulpet mig med, at slutte fred med mig selv og min stil. Stå af forbrugsræset og se mere indad, i stedet for at lade mig styre af trends og lade mig diktere af hvad jeg “bør” have i min garderobe. Jeg ved godt jeg selv laver diverse guides med “musthave basics” og andre lignende (click-bait) titler, men i virkeligheden deler jeg jo blot mine musthaves. Den kan man lade sig inspirere af eller lade være. Til efteråret lancerer jeg dog forhåbentligt et spritnyt online kursus til alle i mit community, så I kan finde frem til hvad der er jeres helt egne musthaves. Jeg starter derfor på en privat uddannelse som style coach til Februar, og jeg kan næsten ikke vente med at komme igang. Så jeg, med langt større selvtillid og meget mere skarp viden, kan hjælpe jer med at stå at forbrugsræset, og slutte fred med garderoben præcis ligesom jeg har lært mig selv de sidste 5 år.

Inspired by a young woman I stumbled upon on Instagram the other day (@callmeflowerchild), I thought I wanted to share some tips on how to really get started cracking the code of “sustainable fashion”. Because what does that even mean? To me a more holistic approach to sustainability always makes most sense. So I’d rather look at the structure of a longlasting wardrobe before I even look at new additions and shopping. Because the most eco-friendly thing thing you can do here and now, is to use what you already have available to you. As I also mentioned in my “low buy challenge” video right before Christmas 2019, there’s an overwhelming focus on the consumption of new clothes (ethically made or not) and too little focus on actually using what you buy.

But it’s not easy busting those old habits, and quit unintentional consumption. Yep, I’ve been there myself. But there are some things you can certainly do, to make the process a lot easier on yourself and get started in a good way.

Inspireret af en ung kvinde jeg faldt over på Instagram forleden dag (@callmeflowerchild), så tænkte jeg at jeg i dag ville dele nogle tips til, sådan for alvor at komme igang med at knække den hårde nød kaldet “bæredygtig mode”. For hvad betyder det overhovedet? For mig giver en mere holistisk tilgang til bæredygtighed altid mere mening. Derfor ser jeg hellere på den langtidsholdbare garderobe opbygning, før jeg begynder at se på eventuelle nye køb og mangler. For det allermest miljøvenlige du kan gøre er, at bruge det du allerede har mere effektivt. Som jeg også sagde i min “low buy challenge” video lige inden jul 2019, så er der i min optik alt for stor fokus på forbruget af nyt tøj (etisk fremstillet eller ej) og for lidt fokus på selve brugsfasen og genbrug generelt.

Det er dog ikke ikke uden udfordringer, at lægge gamle (overforbrugs)vaner på hylden. Jep, jeg taler af erfaring. Men der er helt bestemt en række ting du aktivt kan gøre for, at lette processen lidt for dig selv og komme godt fra start.

Here are my 7 best tips on how make those first, vital steps into ethical fashion easier on yourself:

1 Acknowledge your privilige

It’s especially this step that is inspired by beforementioned @callmeflowerchild. It’s something we often forget in this whole debate about eco-friendly fashion; that it is an absolute privilege, to even have the power and a voice to make the best possible choice as a consumer. To even be able to consume. And we need to use this voice more carefully and with a bigger sense of respect. We need to acknowledge that shifting our mindsets might be uncomfortable too. Simple as that.

Det er især dette punkt, der er inspireret af førnævnte @callmeflowerchild. Det er noget vi ofte glemmer i hele den her debat om miljøvenlig mode; at det er et absolut privilegie, vi overhovedet har magten og en stemme til selv, at træffe de bedst mulige valg som forbrugere. Og at vi overhovedet kan forbruge. Og vi skal lære, at bruge denne stemme mere varsomt og med større respekt. Vi skal vænne os til tanken om, at nogle af disse forandringer skubber til vores grænser og måske er ubehagelige. Ganske enkelt.

2 Unsubscribe

A little more hands-on it’s a good idea to unsubscribe from any place that offers content that either tempts you to buy something you don’t actually want or need, or even makes you think less about yourself. I’m especially thinking about online shops or even influencers, who unconsciously make you feel bad about yourself some way or the other. People who make you feel like you’re not doing well enough – also when speaking sustainability. I’ve had to unsubscribe from a couple channels myself last year, because I simply do not get motivated to make a difference, from content that primarily focus on negativity and catastrophe. It triggers my anxiety too much and it removes my courage and energy to actually want to make a difference. Mere hands-on er det en god idé at unsubscribe alle de steder, hvor der er indhold som enten frister dig til impulskøb eller får dig til at føle, at du ikke er god nok. Vi snakker især nyhedsbreve fra diverse online shops eller måske influencers, som igen ubevidst får dig til at tænke negativt om dig selv. Eller får dig til at føle, du ikke gør det godt nok – også når vi snakker bæredytighed. Jeg har selv måttet sige farvel til et par kanaler sidste år, fordi jeg ganske enkelt ikke bliver motiveret af negativitet og katastrofetænkning. 3 Be mindful with social media

Speaking of social media, practise the art of using these with more intention instead of out of habit or restlessness. Read my thoughts on how social media can actually be good for us right HERE. Give your time, your likes and your appreciation to content and creators who help you, inspire you or simply makes you smile.

I forlængelse af førnævnte punkt, så øv dig i at bruge sociale medier med langt større intention frem for af rastløshed eller vane. Giv din tid, dine likes og din påskønnelse til indhold, som på en eller anden måde hjælper dig, inspirer eller opløfter dig.

4 Reinvent your existing wardrobe (without shopping)

The essence of a capsule wardrobe is that you only have clothes available to you that you feel like (and the weather allows you to) wearing right now. That way you don’t have to worry about anything else. With a capsule wardrobe, you usually end up with a private little “library” of clothing. So that’s all the clothes you can’t wear right now because it’s not in season, or simply clothing you just need a break from. It tricks your brain because as soon as you pack these items out from storage again, it feels like getting new clothes. This way you can “shop your wardrobe” and reinvent it, all without spending a dime or impacting the environment. It’s a very effective way to be creative with your style through periods where you feel like you miss a sense of news value! You could also try a good old DIY. Turn old clothes into new ones, give an old sweater new life by dying it and what else you can think of. You can follow my DIY series on Youtube right HERE.

Essensen af en capsule wardrobe er, at du kun har tøj hængende i skabet som du har lyst til at (og rent vejrmæssigt kan) bruge lige nu, så du ikke behøver at bekymre dig om eller blive overældet af alt det omkringliggende. Med en capsule wardrobe ender de fleste mennesker med deres helt eget tøj “bibliotek”. Dvs. tøj der er udenfor sæson eller som man ganske enkelt har brug for en pause fra lige nu. Det snyder hjernen til at føle, at så snart du pakker dette tøj frem igen, så føles det som nyt. På den måde kan du shoppe din egen garderobe, dog helt uden at spendere en eneste krone og uden at belaste miljøet yderligere. Det er en yderst effektiv måde, at være kreativ med sin stil på i de perioder, hvor man alligevel trænger til der sker lidt nyt! Du kan også kaste dig ud i en DIY. Omdan gammelt tøj til noget nyt, farv din gamle sweater eller hvad du nu kan komme på. Følg min DIY serie på Youtube lige HER.

5 Make moodboards

Oh, my fave! I LOVE crawling under the covers after a long day with a good cup of tea (or hot cocoa) and find inspiration on Pinterest. I’ve made it a habit to mainly pin outfits that I can somehow recreate with things I already have in my wardrobe. Pictures that somehow reassure me and make me realise that my style is mine, and it’s perfect as it is even though I don’t wear colours and I often wear the same outfits over and over again too. That being said, it’s also a great tool for planning new purchases, so you can get inspired on how to style up certain items in multiple ways. Åh, min favorit! Jeg ELSKER, at kravle ned under dynen efter en lang dag, med en god kop te (eller varm kakako) og finde inspiration på Pinterest. Jeg har for vane for det meste, at gemme billeder af outfits jeg på én eller anden måde let kan kreere med ting jeg allerede har i garderoben. Billeder som bekræfter mig i, at min stil er helt rigtig for mig og at jeg er god nok selvom jeg stort set aldrig går i farver, ofte gentager de samme outfits og går i de samme gamle favoritter om og om igen. Det er dog også et yderst effektivt værktøj til eventuel planlægning af nye køb, da du på denne måde kan se et givent item i en sammenhæng og få inspiration til styling på flere forskellige måder. 5 Make a budget

Although Morten and I do have different accounts like our food budget, savings, an account for any unexpected expenses, individual savings etc., I’ve never really dived into the subject of budgetting here on my blog. I do know that it’s something low buy babe Style Apotheca like to talk about quite often though, and I do see the importance of mentioning it. It’s a great way to easily track the economic benefits of a “buy less but better” kind of lifestyle, and you can also track any room to make a purchase you’ve been dreaming about for a long time. Or at least make the room for it. It removes the focus from what you can’t do to what you actually can

Jeg taler sjældent om dette (lidt tørre, men vigtige) emne på mine kanaler. Bevares, mind mand og jeg har vores konti opdelt i ting som madkonto, fælles opsparing, individuelle opsparinger, uforudsete udgifter m.m. så vi har selvfølgelig en struktur der hjælper os med, at få hjulene til at køre rundt i det daglige. Jeg ved dog at low buy babe Style Apotheca ynder at tale meget om budgettering når man lever efter “low buy” principper, og jeg kan sagtens se fidusen i det. Her kan du nemlig let se de økonomiske glæder en “køb mindre men bedre” tankegang kan medføre, og ikke mindst gøre økonomisk plads til eventuelle drømmekøb. Det flytter fokus lidt over på hvad du rent faktisk kan og , fremfor udelukkende at se på hvad du ikke må.

6 Allow yourself

Kind of like with a diet, I think a complete “starvation” or “shopping ban” might be the solution for some people, but for others this might end up in failure. Not to mention make you feel like a failure should you fall back into old habits. And we don’t want that! Besides, I don’t necessarily think anti-consumption will save the world either. Like I mentioned in step 5, we need to focus more on what we actually can do rather than what we can’t. To compare with dieting again (because it seems to work so well haha), if you wan’t success with a lifestyle change you need to focus on the things you can do to change your life instead of beating yourself up with what you can’t – if you starve yourself you might end up overeating. Or over-consuming new clothes, when speaking low buy vs. no buy. So give yourself some form of allowance; note down your dream purchases, make room for them in your budget or save up to them once and for all, allow yourself a good thrift hunt or have a swap party with your friends. Peace be with the fact that news value in your wardrobe might be a thing for you. But there are many eco-friendly ways to work around this!

Lidt ligesom med slankekure, så tror jeg en komplet “sultning” eller “shopping ban” kan være løsningen for nogle, men for andre lægger det måske mere op til en fiasko. Og ikke mindst, at føle sig som en fiasko hvis man falder i fælden. Dér skal vi ikke hen! Desuden tror jeg heller ikke nødvendigvis på, at nul-forbrug kan redde verden. I forlængelse af førnævnte punkt, så skal vi i højere grad flytte fokus hen på hvad vi så faktisk og kan gøre. For at sammenligne med slankekure igen (for det giver et overraskende godt billede haha), så bør man i langt højere grad fokusere på hvad man faktisk må, hvis man skal have succes og virkelig ændre sin livsstil – sulter du dig selv kan det ende med overspisning. Eller over-shopping, i snakken om low buy vs. no buy. Så giv dig selv lov; skriv dine drømmekøb ned, plot dem ind i dit budget og spar op én gang for alle eller giv dig selv lov til at gå på genbrugsjagt eller bytte tøj med veninderne. Fred være med, at man gerne vil have nyhedsværdi ind i garderoben. Der findes masser af miljøvenlige måder, at gøre dette på!

7 Other enjoyable activities than shopping

And now that we’re speaking about moving your focus, I wrote THIS post a couple years ago, with my best tips on how to quit impulse shopping once and for all. So that might be another good place for you to find some inspiration to get your consumption habits under control. It’s about getting to know yourself; find out why you shop, and if you use retail therapy to cover up something that lies deeper within you. Maybe you buy things out of impulse, because you need to work on something within yourself? And are there other things you enjoy doing that is not shopping related, that you could try focusing on instead? Read more in the post I mentioned before.

    HI Signe,
    thanks for this helpful post. Following your recommendation, I have downloaded cladwell app (and I love it). When entering all my wardorbe (or almost), what took the whole evening, I finally got too many proposal, so I understood, that I have far too many clothes in my wardrobe. I could probably dress for years with it and as I get too many outfits proposed, hence, I cannot decide either. So, next project for me is definetely reducing may wardrobe to 30% of what it is today and not buying anything for the next months (except a new pair of white sneakers). Your above mentioned steps should help me with that. Thanks again for the inspiration.
    And even if you say everyone needs to find his musthaves, I love that you share your capsule wardrobes, as your style is very nice and I learn a lot from it.
