How to build a capsule wardrobe: version 2017.

  • Min “occasional wear” mini-capsule.

/ I don’t really remember how long I’ve followed the capsule wardrobe system, but I think it’s about 2 years now. I think that you can customize it so that it fits your personality and your lifestyle. I went from the very strict set of rules to a more fluid approach a little while back, but I would still recommend that you start by following the original rules, which is a maximum of 37 pieces per season, and no swapping in the middle of a season. Because this is the process you are learning most about yourself, and then you may loosen the rules a little bit along the way if you like, as I have done. Anyway – I’ve made a new video where I show how I’ve built my wardrobe in a slightly more “fluid” manner. To me, the number of products is no longer the mist important thing. Of course, it is still important for me to keep the thought of less is more, and I’m probably somewhere between 30-45 products from season to season. It’s however more important to me, that it is the right things I have in my wardrobe. Of course, I’m still trying to limit myself – but instead of the frame becoming a number, the frame has become 4 segments that fit different situations of my life:

  • My all year basics. Suitable for all seasons and events.
  • The season based products. These products are typically something I pull out from my stored clothes (extra knitwear in winter and dresses in summer, for example), but it can also be a single new product or two.
  • The trend based products. This could also be something from my stored collection of clothes or – as I would like to try to practice something more – something I buy in the local secondhand shop. There may also be a new product among these, but I try as far as possible not to purchase the “passing trend” items from new. These products are the more “fun” things that can spice up the other things a little.
  • Occasional wear mini-capsule. This little capsule does not count in my everyday capsule, but it remains important to me that it stays as small as possible. It’s nice to have a bunch of different things to create some great looks with, for whenever I want to go out. Because events have been something that pushed me towards impulse buys in the past! Learn how to build your own by following my guide right HERE.

The season-based products as well as the trend-based I consider to be slightly more “fluid” elements in my wardrobe, and I can exchange them with some of my stored things along the way – if the temperatures are going crazy or if I just don’t use that trendy polka dot shirt as much as I wished right now, well then I simply swap it with something from my stored collection. It doesn’t happen so often though, but the possibility is there and that’s nice. My all-year basics however, I don’t ever mess with them! Not unless there is something that needs to be replaced.

But anywho, watch the video – it explains everything more precise!
